Surplus 1980

Thomas Scandura was a member of Moe Staiano’s frenetic band Surplus 1980 from 2011-2015. Surplus 1980’s music takes inspiration from the post-punk bands of the 1980s. The compositions combine a fierce muscular attack with experimental avant-rock and its own language of rhythmic repetition and percussive lyrics.  The band during this period played many local shows included sharing bills with both the Fred Frith Trio and Free Salamander Exhibit.

Surplus 1980 has had several personnel changes since its inception. The current version of the band features five musicians including two drummers and is probably the best expression of Moe’s vision for the project. They have released several CDs and play the San Francisco Bay Area fairly often.
